Immersive Reader

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before uploading your first PDF.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is processed entirely in your browser: the text is extracted right there, without uploading the file anywhere. To generate audio, the text of each paragraph is sent to our server, which forwards it to Microsoft Edge's voice service to synthesize it on the fly; it isn't stored in any database.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There's no sign-up or login: upload your PDF and start listening.

Is it free?

Yes, Immersive Reader is free.

What voices and languages are available?

Neural voices in Spanish (Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and the US) and English, with adjustable reading speed.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

The PDF needs selectable text. Scanned PDFs that are just an image (no text layer or OCR) aren't supported yet.

Is it useful for dyslexia or low vision?

Yes. It includes dyslexia-friendly typography, bionic reading, high-contrast and sepia themes, and adjustable font size, plus word-by-word highlighting that follows the read-aloud audio.

Where is my reading progress saved?

In your own browser (not on a server), so your library and reading position don't sync automatically across different devices or browsers.
